The Global Challenge
For many
businesses, the challenge when considering
skills development of employees in a
variety of geographic locations are
the training's:
Quality
Value
Appropriateness/Effectiveness
and
Consistency
1.
Quality
For anyone who has looked at the various
training solutions out there, you will know
that there is significant
difference in the quantity and quality of
training design and
delivery. So what some companies do is take the “better
the devil you know" approach and use a trainer they know who has performed well working with
one culture and on one subject but may not be the most appropriate
trainer for the current project or geography.

2.
Value
The cost
of travel and accommodation continues to soar.
However, trainers are still flown around
the world, provided hotel accommodation and expenses at significant
additional cost to the client which eats into the training budget,
potentially effecting quality and/or the quantity of training.

3.
Appropriateness/effectiveness
There is a
big difference between the ability to speak English and
the actual use of English.
And while many international companies
expect employees to be able to speak business English, 93% of employees
across JAPAC, when surveyed (in confidence) said they preferred to
receive training in local language.
Some respondents felt that a trainer who
does not understand their language, is unlikely to understand what is
culturally appropriate. Some admitted to having a limited comprehension
of the English language (they could read it but not understand the
speaker).

4.
Consistency
Recognising point 2 and 3 above, some companies engage local trainers.
Many of these trainers are excellent.
However, the challenge with local trainers is that they are… Local.
And for many international organisations
working with international clients across multiple geographies, the
possibility of having multiple countries taking multiple approaches can
be a management nightmare.
Add to this the need to deal with multiple
trainers in multiple languages… Well, you probably get the drift.
